What the research examines
Cordyceps militaris has been studied in human trials for aerobic capacity, ATP production, and exercise endurance. The cultivated militaris species is more commonly found in commercial products than the parasitic sinensis.
What is Cordyceps?
Cordyceps is a genus of parasitic fungi found across Asia, most notably in the high-altitude regions of Tibet, Nepal, and China. Two species appear most often in supplements: Cordyceps sinensis and Cordyceps militaris. Wild Cordyceps sinensis grows by infecting and consuming moth larvae, which makes it extraordinarily rare and expensive. Most commercial supplements use either cultivated Cordyceps militaris (fruiting body) or a fermented mycelium extract known as Cs-4, which was developed in China as a more consistent and scalable alternative to the wild form.
Cordyceps has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for centuries, where it was associated with vitality and physical endurance. It was historically reserved for royalty and high-ranking officials due to its scarcity. Today it appears in capsules, powders, coffees, and multi-mushroom blends sold widely in the UK and internationally. The scientific and regulatory interest in cordyceps has grown considerably since the 1990s, when Chinese athletes credited it as part of their training regimen, prompting researchers to examine its active compounds more closely.
Key Active Compounds
Cordyceps contains several compounds that researchers and formulators pay close attention to. The most studied are beta-glucans, cordycepin, adenosine, polysaccharides, and D-mannitol (also called cordycepic acid).
Beta-glucans are structural polysaccharides found in the cell walls of fungi. They are the primary marker used to assess extract quality across most medicinal mushrooms, including cordyceps. A disclosed beta-glucan percentage allows meaningful comparison between products and is one of the key data points Cogniscore looks for on product labels and certificates of analysis (COAs).
Cordycepin (3'-deoxyadenosine) is a nucleoside analogue unique to cordyceps. It is considered one of the most pharmacologically interesting compounds in this genus and features in a substantial body of in vitro and animal research. Adenosine is a related nucleoside involved in cellular energy metabolism and has been examined in the context of physical performance. D-mannitol is a sugar alcohol found naturally in Cordyceps sinensis and is sometimes used as a marker compound for species authentication.
Cogniscore looks specifically for disclosed beta-glucan content because it is the most consistently reported quality marker across mushroom supplement research. Products that do not disclose it score lower on transparency.
Benefit Areas Studied in Research
Energy. Cordyceps has been studied in clinical research for its relationship to cellular energy production, with particular interest in compounds such as adenosine and cordycepin. Some trials using the Cs-4 extract have looked at self-reported and measured energy-related outcomes in older adults. Research in this area has used doses ranging from 1,000mg to 3,000mg per day over periods of four to twelve weeks. The population studied, the extract type used, and the outcome measures vary considerably across trials.
Stamina. Human trials have examined stamina-related endpoints such as time to exhaustion and sustained physical output. Some studies have used Cordyceps militaris fruiting body extracts to examine these outcomes in recreationally active adults. Research designs have included both acute (single-dose) and chronic (multi-week) supplementation protocols. Not all trials have used placebo-controlled designs, which is a relevant limitation when reading findings in this area.
Aerobic capacity. A number of researchers have examined whether cordyceps supplementation is associated with changes in VO2 max, a measure of maximal oxygen uptake during exercise. Human RCTs have used doses within the 1,000mg to 3,000mg range, most commonly over four to twelve weeks. Study populations have included both older sedentary adults and younger, physically active participants, and findings have differed between these groups.
Oxygen utilisation. Research has looked at oxygen utilisation efficiency as a physiological endpoint in the context of cordyceps supplementation. This line of inquiry draws on the traditional high-altitude use of wild cordyceps and interest in adenosine's role in cellular metabolism. Most relevant human studies have been small in sample size, and larger independent trials are needed to draw firm conclusions.
The Science and Research
The two most frequently cited human RCTs in this area come from Chen et al. (2010) and Hirsch et al. (2017), both of which examined cordyceps in the context of physical performance.
Chen S et al. (2010), published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, examined exercise performance in healthy older subjects using Cs-4 extract (a fermented mycelium preparation of Cordyceps sinensis). The trial used a dose of 3,000mg per day over twelve weeks and was a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled design. Researchers measured aerobic capacity and metabolic thresholds. The study population was older adults rather than athletes, which is relevant when interpreting findings. The sample size was relatively small, which is a limitation common to this field.
Hirsch KR et al. (2017), published in the Journal of Dietary Supplements, looked at tolerance to high-intensity exercise using Cordyceps militaris fruiting body extract. The trial examined both acute (single-dose) and chronic (three-week) supplementation in recreationally active young adults. The study was a randomised, double-blind, crossover design, which carries methodological weight. Doses used were within the 1,000mg to 4,000mg range. The short duration and small sample are noted limitations.
Beyond these two frequently cited trials, a number of in vitro and animal model studies have examined cordycepin specifically. These studies have looked at cellular-level interactions in laboratory settings and cannot be used to draw conclusions about effects in humans. In vitro findings, while useful for understanding mechanisms, do not translate directly to clinical outcomes.
A broader point about cordyceps research is that the species and extract form used varies significantly across studies. Cs-4 extract, cultivated Cordyceps militaris fruiting body, and mycelium-based whole powders are not equivalent, and findings from one preparation should not be applied to another. Industry funding and small sample sizes are common limitations across this body of literature. Larger, independent, well-controlled trials are needed before confident conclusions can be drawn.
How Cogniscore Evaluates Cordyceps
Cogniscore assesses cordyceps products against several disclosure criteria. The first is dose transparency. Clinical research has most commonly used 1,000mg to 3,000mg of Cs-4 extract or equivalent per day. Products that do not disclose the amount of cordyceps per serving cannot be compared against this range, and their scores reflect that gap in disclosure. Products that fall below this range, or that bundle cordyceps into a proprietary blend without individual ingredient weights, are scored accordingly.
Source type and extraction method also affect scoring. Fruiting body extracts are the form most consistently used in human RCT research. Mycelium-on-grain preparations are common in commercial products but are less well represented in clinical trials. Products using dual extraction or standardised extracts score higher on this criterion when they disclose the method clearly. Beta-glucan percentage is a key transparency marker. Products that disclose a verified beta-glucan figure, ideally supported by a COA from a third-party laboratory, score higher than those that do not. What happens outside of controlled research conditions is not something Cogniscore can comment on.
A Cogniscore score reflects how completely a brand publicly discloses information about its product. This includes the dose per serving, the source type (fruiting body or mycelium), the extraction method, the beta-glucan percentage, and whether a third-party COA is available. A higher score means more information is publicly available. It does not mean the product is of higher quality or that it will produce any particular outcome.
A COA (certificate of analysis) is a document from a third-party laboratory that confirms a product's composition matches what is stated on the label. For cordyceps supplements, a COA can verify beta-glucan content, confirm the absence of contaminants, and authenticate the species used. Without a publicly available COA, label claims about beta-glucan percentage or species identity cannot be independently confirmed. Cogniscore scores products higher when a COA is publicly accessible.
Fruiting body and mycelium preparations have different compositional profiles. The fruiting body is the above-ground reproductive structure of the fungus, while mycelium is the root-like network. Some human clinical trials have used fruiting body extracts, others have used mycelium-derived Cs-4 extract. Neither form has been shown to be categorically superior. What matters most for transparency is that the brand clearly states which part of the fungus was used and discloses the relevant quality markers.
Limited Disclosure means the brand has not publicly shared enough information for a full assessment. In the cordyceps category, this commonly means the per-serving dose is not individually stated (especially in multi-mushroom blends), the beta-glucan percentage is not disclosed, or no third-party COA is available. These are gaps in public information, not necessarily indicators of product quality. Brands can improve their score by publishing more complete compositional data.
